But the one that caught our eye the most is “mobile app-based truck receipt using QR code/geofencing.” Not much detail has been provided about their particular solution, but a system like this is used to automate dispatch, proof of delivery (POD), and inventory logs. It’s a great way to eliminate paperwork and manual data entry errors.
JSW Steel mobile-first sales and SAMPARK
That’s not all from JSW Steel. Another way that the company uses mobile apps is to manage sales and distribution. Their Salesforce-powered platform digitised over 80 key channel processes (e.g. inventory management, returns, retailer engagement) through mobile-first applications and real-time analytics. This enables seamless operations and data-driven decision-making across their entire sales network.
Finally, there’s project SAMPARK, a unified, end-to-end digital platform for road logistics at the organization’s plants. It enables real-time visibility, solves manual dependencies and suboptimal resource use, and replaces outdated processes with automation and smart tracking.
It digitizes over 10 million transactions and saves 2 million man-hours each year, all with seamless updates via mobile and IoT.
Steel Dynamics’ mobile application for incident management
Developed by the company’s Core Safety Group, the mobile application is “used in the field, engaging team members and contractors in hazard identification, as tasks are being performed. It provides a meaningful opportunity to address exposures proactively.”
It’s a great example of an app that’s deeply enmeshed with the firm’s systems. The app is an extension of Steel Dynamics’ Incident Management System, which is a central source for all recognized hazards to address them and control exposure.
In addition to routine safety audits and procedure reviews, the mobile app gives workers a way to respond quickly whenever faced with potential danger, which is invaluable when your daily bread is molten metal and dangerous chemicals.

Murata’s white label mobile app
How do you differentiate your product or add more value to your offer? You can provide a white label mobile app to go along with it.
That’s what electronics company Murata did with a module for multi-technology geolocation. To provide more value to their customers, they paired the product with a white label app with “advanced location tracking features such as device pairing, location sharing, and firmware updates.”
Flex’s real-time incident prevention and compliance management
After launching an online incident reporting tool, electronics company Flex followed up with a mobile app to make it easier for workers to capture first aid incidents and ‘near hits’.
Beyond that, the company’s internal IT department developed applications to manage compliance, chemicals, and safety inspections. These apps “track completion of compliance requirements, provide streamlined processes to automate inspections and action management, and provide sites with Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s) and automated chemical labeling.”
Automatic SOP creation and builder onboarding
An anonymous custom lighting manufacturer creates LED fixtures for businesses. With hundreds of unique designs, they build all products by hand.
The products are complex, plus the company wants to achieve a difficult 10-day lead time. Their labor time and inventory tracking methods aren’t keeping up. They need a solution to optimize shop floor operations while integrating with their system of record, NetSuite.

The company envisioned unifying its services into one app, so its’ partners worldwide could have a better view of their inventory, orders, repairs, and docs.
This vision became a reality, the Fokker Services app was born, and it’s now the organization’s main service channel on mobile.
The in-app database contains 800,000+ components, from bolts to high-tech products. It’s built for mechanics, managers, and buyers, so recognizability and efficiency is important.
Plus, the database is available offline, so users can check it even when their phones don’t have any bars. They can also determine if repairs are done in-house or outsourced to third parties, and find alternatives to parts not in stock.
Skanska’s concrete app
Skanska’s concrete app is a natural extension of their concrete solutions business. Clients can follow delivery progress in real time and manage booked and delivered concrete.
The app is also a way for Skanska to share information about their work on safety and sustainability. Clients receive the latest information about their range of products and services, and make it easy to contact company representatives.
NCC’s CPOT app for digitized road maintenance
Built for one of the leading construction companies in Europe, NCC, the CPOT app is a brilliant solution that solved the problem of time-consuming, inefficient, and expensive road maintenance.
NCC has struggled for years with reporting road damages and ordering repair materials. They wanted to streamline and automate this process, making it as simple as ordering takeout on a smartphone.
In the past, road inspectors would take notes, and then return to their office and record those notes into an ERP system. They couldn’t immediately report and describe road damage on-site, nor determine the precise location, which made it harder for contractors to deliver materials properly.
The app solved all of those issues, and it adapted to the realities of road maintenance specialists – the first step of submitting a new order is adding a photo of the damage, because it’s the first thing the inspector does at the scene.
Steelwrist AB’s InstallMate app for excavation equipment installation
Tiltrotractor manufacturer Steelwrist AB wanted to simplify the installation procedure for their partners and service technicians around the world. At the time, their instructions were disorganized and hard to follow, resulting in long installs and errors.
The goal for the app was to create a simple, mobile solution with multiple languages, clear installation steps, and a fast contact path to the technical team. The finished app is exactly that, plus it offers ongoing educational support and QR code scanning for quick access to relevant instructions.

What is the future of mobile apps in heavy industry?
So what do the next two or three years look like? The direction is already visible in the apps above.
Expect AI-assisted maintenance to move from predicting failures to recommending fixes, with the app telling a technician not only that a pump is about to fail, but which part to bring and how to swap it.
On-device processing will let phones and tablets run quality checks on the spot, catching a weld defect or a mislabeled component right in the camera feed. The line between IoT and mobile will keep blurring.
